Montana fly fishing is a high priority on every angler’s list
There are four major rivers flowing through Montana, Flathead,
Madison, Missouri and Yellowstone. Among these Yellowstone is the best known for fly fishing, particularly for
trout, though the entire river here has something wonderful to offer. No wonder Montana fly fishing is a high
priority on every angler’s list. Make sure you have good bass
fishing tackle.
Why is Fly Fishing in Montana Such a Sought after Spot?
All the rivers that flow through this State are great for fly
fishing. Fly fishing in Montana has become a famous fishing destination because you can experience all types of
fishing in these waters, each river adding its own, and often unique challenge.
1. The Yellowstone River – Here you will find trout in great abundance so
you can always have a catch even if you are a beginner. This is a great place to practice your technique since the
river is easy to wade through and the waters are smooth and not too challenging. Make a note however, that here the
fish has to be released after it is caught.
2. The Madison River – once upon a time this river was unparalleled in its bounty
of fish. People from all over the world would converge here for some of the greatest catches ever. In the early 90s
however, a parasite infiltrated the river and killed a vast majority of the fish population, leaving the river
almost bare. With a lot patience and care, the fish population has been restored and slowly the Madison River is
climbing to its no.1 position on the Montana fly fishing charts. Today, you get a wide variety of fish here, i.e.
brown trout, rainbow trout, graylings, and cutthroats.
3. The Flathead River and Lake – here you can get some of the heavyweight trout
that the Montana fly fishing is so famous for. There are guides for those who need to cut off wading time, and the
result can be astounding. The fish here is so large that sometimes it looks very unreal! The rainbow trout can come
in weights of 20 pound plus leaving the angler very excited and deliriously happy.
4. The Missouri River – this river too is famous for its trout, though less
popular than the other three rivers. Here besides the trout you can also angle for largemouth bass and pike though
they are smaller in size here.
